The electrical grid is very sensitive to thunderstorms.
We do our best to build a power grid as safe as possible, but it is still sensitive to thunderstorms. Ellevio receives forecasts from the Swedish meteorological service SMHI where we can follow the direction of the thunderstorm and when it will probably end. The forecasts help us to prepare and call in extra personnel in order to handle any damage. If lightning hits a distribution substation the power distribution can be affected.
What to do
Disconnect the TV, stereo, phone, antenna cables and all the cables to the computer. If you are in a building without lightning protection, keep away from phone and electricity cables as well as water pipes when the thunderstorm is close. Avoid taking a bath, showering or opening the taps because water can lead electricity. Do not use the stationary phone and do not sit close to the TV. Do not stand in open fields, avoid lakes and other watercourses. Do not stand under high objects, for example trees, poles and flagpoles.
Your own responsibility
You can protect yourself by installing lightning protection. Lightning could not only damage electronics and electronic devices, it can also cause fires and personal injury. If you need any advice, please contact an electrician or your insurance company.
